Exercise class. When people take exercise classes, there is a difference between just getting by versus doing the exercise right. Recently, I took a exercise class. What I witnessed was all sorts of form and intensity. Now, mind you I am a personal trainer so I may be a little judgmental (just a lil) when it comes to seeing people exercise. Shorter range of motion. Not activating the muscle to its full potential. Not running as hard as they can. These are all things I saw. I did not know these people, so its hard to say if they had limitations or not.
Exercise is EFFORT-based; if you don’t push yourself or allow us (trainers) to push you, you will NOT get results. If your intention of taking a exercise class is to lose weight, gain muscle mass, tone up, get a six-pack, then you have to put EFFORT. Let’s take a look at the difference between getting by vs doing it right.
First, is the results. I compare this to taking a college course. When you sit down in lecture, you have A, B, C, D, and F students. So what is the difference in their performance? Why do the D and F students get bad grades? Is it due to lack of studying? Not comprehending the material? What are the A and B students doing to get good grades? Just because you show up to lectures doesn’t guarantee you good grades. In education, there’s a difference between memorizing and actually applying the material. The same thing is true with exercise. Just because you see the right form on someone doesn’t mean you are going to the exercise right. However, this may be the difference in results. If you do a exercise correctly every time versus half of the time, the difference WILL be huge.
Always remind yourself that if you want results, then getting by is not going to get you there.
Secondly, getting by means you are not putting in 100%. Now I get it some days you don’t feel good and that’s completely normal. However, if this becomes a trend, then it is NOT good. Your normal is 50% effort. Always remind yourself that if you want results, then getting by is not going to get you there. I like to make a reference to sports. The best players show up every game. However, even the best players have off days. But for the most part, they bounce right back and have a good game. So, don’t create a bad habit of putting in less effort. It’s a slippery slope.
