PAIN: Don’t wait until you’re in it

Don’t wait until you ARE in pain. This is what I tell my clients all the time. Get in the habit of stretching. I don’t know how many times I have said this throughout my career as a personal trainer. “Yeah, I know Kei. But, I just forget/don’t have time.” The excuses just keep piling on. Then, BAM! You tweak your back while gardening. Could this have been avoided had you been in a habit of stretching? It’s hard to say, but you would be more likely for your muscles to be relaxed.

Secondly, what do people do when they are in pain? Stretch, ice/heat, rest. But, A LOT of stretching. So why not apply it on a regular basis to minimize the chance of pulling your back or neck? People forget and I understand. Just constantly remind yourself to take care of that one area that you are tight in and get in the habit of stretching that area at least 1 minute everyday. It’s really not much to ask for. If you have time watching TV for couple of hours, you have time to stretch.

Lastly, you want to prepare for the activity. You know you are going to be more active during summer time, so let’s PREPARE our body for it. Swimming, biking on the pier, gardening outside, running, hiking, the list goes on how much more active we are going to be during the summertime. The last thing you want to happen to you is being in pain and not allowing you to enjoy yourself. Hope you liked this week’s blog, stay tuned for more next Wed……………………Kei
