Work on your GRIT

Grit: an individual’s perseverance of effort combined with the passion for a particular long-term goal or end state.

Yes, you need GRIT. Especially in fitness. There will be days where you don’t want to exercise. There will be days where you are sick or injured. You will lose your progress or gain weight. “This isn’t working for me.” There will be countless times where you want to quit. Who’s going to push you? Nobody other than yourself. Having that belief and sticking to it is the only way to persevere. It starts with believing in the process.

There’s always something you can do when you cannot exercise.

In exercise, there’s more to it than working out. You want to avoid injuries or being sick? Work on having a balanced diet, get ample rest, drink 8 cups of water, and stretch daily. Work on everything. Trust me, there’s always something you can do when you cannot exercise. Look up healthy recipes. Dedicate one hour to stretching. These will come in handy once you get back to speed on exercising. You will notice your body will be more nourished, have more energy, and moving better.

Go at your pace.

This is a big one for me. There’s plenty of people that more in shape than me. On the other hand, there are plenty that are not. Does it matter? Absolutely NOT. I could care less about what other people are doing. They are not me. So understand that comparing yourself to others will do you no good. Go at your pace.

Grit is the ultimate trait you want in fitness. If you want it to last, it is a long journey and your mental strength will be tested. Our bodies change over time, you won’t have the same capabilities as you did in your 10’s, 20’s, 30’s and so on (depressing I know). You are going to have to modify your routine the way your body changes. Guess what? You might need to stretch more. Coming back in full circle, right? So understand that its okay to not be the strongest, fastest, most flexible. As long as you have grit, then your chances of keeping fitness in your life will be higher.
