Looking good. Some people start exercising for these reasons. Now, there is NOTHING wrong about this. You are doing something POSITIVE and that’s great. Now being the summertime, we all want six-pack abs and show them off to the world. However, exercise doesn’t have to be just about looking good. Others start exercising because they want to feel better. So is feeling good better than looking good?
“I want six pack abs.” “I want to look the best for my wedding.” We hear these requests as personal trainers and do our best to get them the best results we can. Obviously the main objective is to get there. However, what’s next? This question confuses people. “I never thought about it.” You look your best for the wedding, go on your honeymoon, and what happens afterwards? Do you stop exercising and eat what ever you want? If the answer is yes, then that’s no problem. However, if you want to maintain your results it takes strategy and planning. In addition, your body will change throughout the years. Metabolism slows down, your recovery isn’t as good, have less time for yourself (kids, higher position in career), these things all play a part in whether you see results or not. GETTING to your goal is one obstacle, but MAINTAINING your goal is ANOTHER.
Your meaning of looking good may change throughout the years.
With this in mind, your reason of exercising may change. If you are waking up the following day in pain, it is miserable. I have been there with my shoulder surgery. It’s not a good place to be. So what do you do? Get stronger. Lose weight. Eat better. Start making changes. I prioritize how I feel from exercising. Helps me cope with stress. All the crap I deal with being a business owner and learning how to juggle my personal life and business can be stressful. Exercise is my shining outlet that allows me to focus on myself. We have mothers/fathers as clients and the training session they have with us is the ONLY hour they have in the day for themselves. Think about that for a second. ONLY 1 HOUR FOR THEMSELVES?
For me, feeling good is my reason for exercising. It wasn’t about having the best abs or having the biggest arms in town. I could care less for those things and I want to make sure I do everything in the gym so I don’t experience the pain I did during recovery from my surgery. Now, there’s nothing wrong about exercising to look good and I’ll save that topic for another blog.
Hope you enjoyed this week’s blog. Stay tuned for more next Wed………………..Kei
