Its not a comparison

Comparison. “I want to look like that.” “I want her arms.” “I want his abs.” Being in the fitness industry and social media having a huge influence, its hard not to be mesmerized or comparing yourself to others. I always tell my clients not to make the comparison because there’s more to it than what you see. So let’s look at these factors in depth.

First, is how long a person has been training. Six pack abs doesn’t happen overnight. Takes months or years to get them. For me, it took 20 years of working out at least 3 times a week to gain close to 40 pounds of muscle. So don’t discount the length of time these people put in to get the body they have.

Creates distractions.

Secondly, the comparison creates distractions. “I’m never going to look like that.” “I can’t do what x does.” This puts you at a disadvantage already before even trying. Taking a example from the battle between David and Goliath. David didn’t get discouraged after hearing about Goliath, rather came up with a strategy to take down Goliath despite the size difference. So rather than feeling defeated before the battle begins, find strategies on how you can get there.

Thirdly, you want to be the best version of yourself. There are certain things you cannot change. Height, for instance (I know its true, I’ve tried). Growing up watching basketball, I always wanted to be 6 foot 3. However, I stopped growing after 5’8. Was I disappointed? No. I learned to accept my height. In addition, torso, leg length, these are things you can’t change. So my best advice is, work with what you have. You WILL start to like your own body if it changes in the direction that you want it to. Hope you liked this week’s blog. Stay tuned for more next Wed……………Kei
